Ecuador Visa Programs

Investor Visa (Inversionista) Qualify through a bank certificate of deposit, real estate purchase, or equity in an Ecuadorian company — one of the lowest minimum investment thresholds among Latin American residency programs.

Rentista (Passive Income) Visa For applicants with regular passive income — rental payments, dividends, interest, royalties, or trust distributions — without a lifetime pension requirement.

Pensionado (Pension) Visa For retirees with a guaranteed lifetime pension from Social Security, a corporate pension, or a similar permanent source.

Digital Nomad Visa For remote workers earning qualifying income from outside Ecuador who want to legally reside in the country while working for employers or clients abroad.

Ecuador Passport & Citizenship Pathway

Ecuador does not offer a direct "Citizenship by Investment" shortcut where you can buy a passport upfront. Instead, it operates a structured, two-step residency system — temporary residency followed by permanent residency — with citizenship available afterward. All financial thresholds are tied to Ecuador's national minimum wage (SBU), which is adjusted periodically.

Temporary Residency

Applicants can qualify for temporary residency through several tracks:

Investor Track Requires a minimum investment equal to 100 times Ecuador's monthly minimum wage — currently $48,200 USD — held as a bank certificate of deposit, real estate, or equity in a locally registered company.

Rentista / Pensionado Track Requires demonstrating monthly passive income or a guaranteed lifetime pension equal to three times Ecuador's monthly minimum wage — currently $1,446 USD. Each additional adult dependent typically adds $250 USD/month to the income requirement.

Digital Nomad Track Requires demonstrating qualifying remote income from outside Ecuador, at a similar threshold to the Rentista track.

Permanent Residency

After maintaining temporary residency and meeting Ecuador's continuous-presence requirements, applicants become eligible to transition to Permanent Residency, which removes ongoing income-verification requirements and grants indefinite residency rights.

Naturalization & The Passport

After a qualifying period of continuous Permanent Residency, applicants can formally apply for Ecuadorian citizenship.

Continuous Residency As with other Latin American naturalization frameworks, extended absences from Ecuador during the qualifying period can affect residency and citizenship eligibility.
